California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I would be lying if I said no," Newsom remarked when asked about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."

Newsom's current term as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he noted that any decision is still years away.

"The future will decide," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic

Newsom has emerged as a high-profile adversary of the current federal leadership, leveraging his online platforms and advocating for a proposition that would increase Democratic House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This move has drawn criticism from critics.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a recent appearance on Fox News. The secretary announced intentions to withhold federal funds from California and warned eliminating the power to grant CDLs.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from California," he declared, after a this week's tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented commercial driver that caused loss of life and injured individuals.

Newsom's office pointed out that the national authorities had renewed the driver's employment on several occasions, which allowed him to obtain a CDL under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was blocking $40m from the state for ignoring linguistic standards for truck drivers.

Strong Response from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, fails to grasp federal law," Newsom's office said in a previous comment countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects

A recent poll showed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters believed that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, his approval ratings has increased to an typical level of about one-third from previous levels, while his unfavorability has fallen from an typical level of more than 40% to current figures.

Some time ago, the governor commented while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The thought that a individual who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the American people."
