In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract bringing in the power-hitting player.

The contract grants a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside compensation of $16M for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the following year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the league MVP award.
  • $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for ranking in the top ten.
  • An identical bonus for earning the top rookie honor.

His deal also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent and grants him a free agent at the end of the contract. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between Japan and the U.S..

Compensation and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization would also receive a supplemental fee of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to represent the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 soon, joins a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing at the bottom in the division but showing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, surpassing the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's coveted Triple Crown.

His last year was curtailed to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Even with striking out often, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Early in his career playing primarily at first base, he has since transitioned to third.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a game-ending two-base hit that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The very next day in the final against the United States, he blasted a equalizing homer in the second inning, helping Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.

The power hitter is set to be unveiled at a press conference on Monday.
