The remains of a 34-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter have been located inside freezing appliances in an flat in the western part of Austria.

The deceased, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were uncovered on Friday. The freezers were hidden behind a false wall in the flat, situated in the city of Innsbruck.

Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his brother aged 53, were detained in June. The elder brother, a work associate of the Syrian woman, stated to authorities last week that there had been an accident—but rejected murder.

Addressing the media previously, a representative for the legal authorities stated the pair were being held on "strong suspicion of murder".

The identities of those concerned have not been disclosed by authorities, in accordance with national regulations.

The vanishing of the mother and child was first reported by the cousin of the mother, who resides in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Police said the woman's colleague told them at the time she had gone on an extended trip with her daughter to travel to her relatives in Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then noted as being active in foreign locations on multiple occasions.

But when police examined the woman's home, her smartphone was located.

An individual also stated hearing a loud noise in the dwelling, and screams of "mum" on the occasion the mother and child were thought to have disappeared.

A broader official inquiry was initiated, with officers finding various messages transmitted via the victim's mobile—including a notice of quitting to her employer and communications to the male colleague.

Officials said a four-figure sum was also sent to the suspect.

A senior police official stated to the press on recently that a storage facility had been secured before the victims' disappearance and a cooling unit had been positioned inside.

The brothers took out the freezer from the facility on the date the mother and daughter went missing, the official revealed. And a seven days after, they obtained an additional appliance.

Officials say they consider this indicates the deaths were intentionally orchestrated.

"The cause of death could not be determined due to the state of decomposition of the bodies," Tersch commented.

The prosecutor's spokesman—representing the state—stated the precise timeline is not yet known, but the bodies were professionally hidden and were not found during a prior examination.

While the brothers were detained in June, it was not until the 12th of November that the 55-year-old admitted to an event and to hiding the bodies. He rejects any intent to kill, investigators said.

Meanwhile, his younger brother acknowledged a cover-up but disputed awareness of a killing.

The brothers are at this time in pre-trial detention in prisons in Innsbruck and Salzburg, situated at a distance.

Via a shared communication, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister stated the "reported homicide of mother and child... constitutes the swift and cruel conclusion of two individuals and uncovers a heartless setup".

"Females of all ages are being killed due to the mere fact that they are of the female gender," they added.

"Femicides are a profoundly embedded and widespread concern that we must address decisively."
